Grief and Mourning for the CDR
Professional and the Client
For those who have lost a loved one, death is not just another
psychological issue. Counseling, funeral attendance, grave visitation,
memory books, family gatherings, and rituals for anniversaries
must all be considered. Adults, children, infants, toddlers and
"uninvolved" siblings all have issues when a loved one dies. Denial
of grief and mourning can cause emotional damage. The best intervention
for some children and families may involve support and companionship
for rituals. Counseling or therapy may be necessary for complicated
grief.
As Child Protective Services is not involved with
every case of a child survivor, Child Death Review Teams are beginning
to realize that because of the CDR members' proximity to the death,
they are very likely the only ones who are responsible or in a
position to insure that the family of the deceased is properly
cared for.
